Banking and Borrowing DVC Points: Complete Guide

Disney Vacation Club offers two powerful tools that give owners flexibility beyond the standard annual use year: banking and borrowing. Understanding how these work helps you maximize your DVC ownership and plan vacations that might otherwise seem out of reach.
What is Point Banking?
Banking allows you to save unused points from your current use year and add them to next year's point allocation. This gives you the ability to combine two years of points for larger vacations, longer stays, or peak season bookings that would exceed a single year's points.
Banking Deadline: You must bank points at least 8 months before your current use year ends. For example, if your use year starts October 1, you have until the end of January to bank that year's points.
Banking Rules
- Banked points must be used within the first year they're banked into (you cannot bank again)
- You can bank all or part of your annual points
- Points can only be banked once - they cannot be banked a second time
- Banking requests are processed through the DVC Member Services website
What is Point Borrowing?
Borrowing lets you use next year's points in advance. This is useful when you want to take a larger trip now but don't have enough current-year points available.
Borrowing Rules
- You can borrow from the immediately following use year only
- Borrowed points come out of next year's allocation
- There is no separate deadline for borrowing - you simply make a reservation using future points
- Be careful not to over-borrow, as it reduces your flexibility for next year
Use Year Calendar and Banking Deadlines
Your use year determines when your annual points become available and when banking deadlines fall. DVC offers eight different use years: February, March, April, June, August, September, October, and December.
Banking Deadline by Use Year:
- February use year: Bank by end of May
- March use year: Bank by end of June
- April use year: Bank by end of July
- June use year: Bank by end of September
- August use year: Bank by end of November
- September use year: Bank by end of December
- October use year: Bank by end of January
- December use year: Bank by end of March
Strategic Tips for Buyers
When purchasing DVC resale, consider contracts with use years that align with when you typically vacation. Also look at the point status - contracts with current year points intact or banked points can provide immediate vacation value.
Strategic Tips for Owners
Set calendar reminders for your banking deadline. Many owners lose points simply by forgetting to bank before the deadline passes. Even if you think you'll use the points, banking provides flexibility if plans change.
If you have questions about banking and borrowing for a specific contract you're considering, our team at DVC Sales can help explain the point situation and what it means for your vacation planning.
